The Great Black Hunter

Hunting season brings out many different types of game hunters, hunting elk, deer, pheasants, etc. Some hunters have moose heads in their dens as trophies of their hunts. My great Aunt Sarah had a wonderful chair sitting in her front room that was made out of antler horns. It wasn't so comfortable, but it was marvelously fascinating.

We haven't had any hunters around our house for awhile, but recently our black cat decided he would give hunting a try. But it didn't begin with hunting season, it started with the onset of winter. That's when we began seeing evidence of the animals that our black hunter was looking for - mice.

I'm not afraid of mice like I used to be. In the days gone by if I saw a mouse running or even tiptoeing by I could climb on a chair so nimbly you'd think I was a trapeze artist.

Years ago I remember reading in the newspaper about a woman who was sleeping with her mouth open and a mouse jumped in her mouth. Oh, gross! I bet that woke her up with a start. That was in the day when we lived in the country and had a lot of mice from the fields. I remember sleeping with my mouth tightly shut for a long time after that.

But now that we have seen mice I'm glad to say that our cat has shown skills as a great black hunter.

The other night it was so cold we let the cat sleep in the house. The next morning my daughter, Lorraine said she thought the cat had caught a mouse in the night because she had heard him jumping around.

In a few minutes she came out of the bathroom with a trophy. Now she didn't have to wonder if the black hunter had caught a mouse, she knew it. She'd found the evidence - a mouse head.

We decided not to mount that head on the wall as a souvenir. Somehow I don't think it's quite the same as a moose head. There IS a slight difference between a mouse head and a moose head.
